Ingredients
- 2 slices of day-old bread
- 1 cup of milk
- 2 ½ Tbsp butter
- 1 Tbsp oil
- 2 onions, diced
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 500g beef mince
- Scant ½ cup of sultanas or raisins
- 2 Tbsp chutney (flavour of choice)
- ¾ Tbsp garam masala
- ½ Tbsp ground coriander
- ¼ tsp ground cloves
- ¼ tsp cumin
- ⅛ tsp nutmeg
- ¾ tsp turmeric
- ¾ tsp mixed spice
- 3 bay leaves
- ¼ tsp ground pepper
- Salt to taste
- 2 eggs, beaten
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 180°C.
- Cut crusts off bread and soak in the milk.
- Add butter and oil to a pot or pan over medium-high heat, then add onions and cook until
softened.
- Add garlic and mince and cook until meat has just browned.
- Take dish off the heat and add all ingredients except the bread, milk and eggs and mix well.
- Squeeze the milk out of the bread and add the bread to the meat mixture, combining everything
well.
- Spoon the meat mixture into a greased ovenproof dish and bake for 30 minutes.
- Mix the eggs with ½ cup of the milk used to soak the bread and pour over the meat
mixture, then bake for a further 30 minutes.
- Serve with yellow rice, vegetables of choice and chutney.
